Make Networking Work For You

“The meeting will be followed by nibbles and networking”

Now, there’s a line that can send shivers down even the most hard-nosed of businesspeople. Not the nibbles – we all love nibbles, particularly bruschetta. But even the most confident people can struggle with business networking – what to say, how to say it and when to stay silent.

Fear not, for EH20 Business Centre – one of the friendliest places to work, in our opinion – is here to help. Here’s three tips to improve your networking game.

1. Remember, everyone is in the same boat.

There are very few natural networkers, and those who seem to be able to do it with ease only got there after years and years of practice. Nobody is born with the skill to balance wine, bruschetta and a fascinating story together, so don’t feel intimidated by those who do.

Everyone is trying to impress, and everyone is nervous. Once you realise all the other networkers are just like you, the whole thing becomes much easier.

2. Don’t be afraid to make the first move

Networking is very much like dating – why do you think speed dating and speed networking both work so well?

Don’t be afraid to say hello to the person waiting in line for that tasty bruschetta, or to that person standing on their own pretending to read an important email on their phone.

Nobody’s out to get you, and you won’t be ignored, shunned or cast out by smiling and commenting on the terrible/beautiful weather we’re having.

3. Stay on target

Take a moment to look at the room. Who is there that it would be useful for you to talk to?

Would you like the CEO to get to know your face? Chances are, you won’t be the only one, so find her and join her group. Listen for a while about what they are talking about and, when you have something relevant to say, say it clearly and with a smile.

Be prepared for a follow up question needing a reply. This is called “conversation” and is something you’ve been doing all your life! And if you do this – you’re doing great! Keep going!
