Top tips to stay active at work

The beauty of a packed lunch

Last month we talked about how adding in a simple exercise regime over a couple of lunchbreaks can be beneficial to your productivity. <<Blog link when live>>. This has piqued some interest, especially amongst those unlucky enough not to have an on-site gym (like we have here at EH20 Business Centre). So this month we’re looking at ways you can stay healthy and active whilst at your desk throughout the day.

Lunch food

Buying your lunch at work is convenient, that much is true. Whether it’s at the staff canteen or somewhere a bit fancier, you can always be sure there will be something to ward off hunger until your evening meal.

These lunches don’t come cheap though. A Boots Meal Deal is £3.99. Multiply that by 5 and you are spending £19.95 a week on soggy sandwiches – that’s not far off £1,000 a year, and wouldn’t you rather have that in your pocket? Luckily, there’s an easy solution.

A packed lunch costs you time and only a little bit of money if you do it right. Buy a nice crusty loaf from the shop, some tomato, lettuce, bit of ham if you like, and you have the start of a healthy lunch and the best part is you know exactly what is going into it. And your options are endless – here’s a load of tasty looking sandwich recipes, here’s some creative ideas from the BBC, and if all else fails, nothing beats leftovers from the night before!

Park further away

We’re lucky here at EH20 Business Centre as we have easy access on-site parking for employees and visitors. This is great for when it’s raining, as it does once or twice a year in Scotland!

On the days when it is nicer, however, why not consider parking a little further away and walking to the office? Even if you are at a park and ride, take a walk from the far end instead of parking up close to the bus stop. And if you do get the bus, get off a stop early and walk briskly. You’d be amazed how much an extra few minutes exercise in the morning will get your blood pumping so you can start your day at the office with energy, rather than caffeine.

Tour the grounds

Go on office adventures

Sitting at your desk all day can make you stiff and sore. Sometimes you don’t even realise it until it’s too late and you have a neck twinge or eye strain or even a dead leg if you’ve really messed up.

We’ve found many good ways to make sure this doesn’t happen, including stretches at your desk and rotating joint like your feet and wrists. One of our favourites, however, is to go on an office adventure or a “touring of the grounds”. A quick stroll around the office can do wonders for circulation and clearing your head, and might even offer up some opportunities to chat with colleagues should they be so inclined.

If you don’t work with others, why not try taking phone calls on the phone? Multitasking – who doesn’t love that?!
